Jazz Trumpeter and Educator

 

Born and raised in New York City, Alex studied trumpet from a young age. After graduating from Connecticut College, where he was introduced to New Orleans-style jazz, Alex moved to New Orleans, where he played professionally for 7 years. While there, Alex founded the Messy Cookers Jazz Band. The group played frequently around the city, including Three Muses, Bamboulas, The Saint Hotel, the Renaissance New Orleans Pere Marquette Hotel, the Renaissance New Orleans Arts Hotel, the Maison Dupuy Hotel, and many private events. The group performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in the Economy Hall tent in April of 2019 and released their most recent CD, “Get Out and Get Under the Moon,” that same month.

In addition to leading the Messy Cookers in New Orleans, Alex enjoyed the privilege of being a sideman in bands led by some of the best musicians in town. These included Steve Pistorius, David Boeddinghaus, John Eubanks, Don Vappie, Mark Brooks, Amy Sharpe, Duke Heitger, Jerry Embree, Jayna Morgan, Benny Amón, and Cassidy Holden. Alex worked regularly at the Court of 2 Sisters, Arnaud’s Jazz Bistro, the Steamboat Natchez, and private functions.

Back in New York, Alex has continued to maintain a busy performance schedule both in the and throughout the northeast region. He leads his New York based group “Alex Owen & His New Orleans Style Jazz Band”, featuring some of the top call New York musicians and he works as a sideman with the Baby Soda Jazz Band, Miss Maybell and Her Jazz Age Artistes, Glenn Crytzer, Terry Waldo’s Gotham City Band, and many more. In August 2022, Alex produced an album with northeast all-star group the “Orleans Kids” titled “Ipswich Bound.”

Alex has traveled extensively to perform throughout the United States. He has led the Messy Cookers and performed with bands in Boston, MA, Ipswich, MA, Los Angeles, CA, Pensacola, FL, Rosemary Beach, FL, Mobile, AL, Huntsville, AL, Birmingham, AL, Columbus, GA, Atlanta, GA, Natchez, MS, and Shreveport, LA.

As an educator, Alex holds a Master’s Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University and has taught students of all ages. In New Orleans, he worked as an elementary school band director and in New York, he has taught Elementary School General Music and works with many private trumpet students. In 2017 and 2019, he was invited to be a Guest Artist Instructor at the Straight 8 Master Summer Jazz Camp in Dallas, TX.
